 National Foreign Affairs Training Center

National Foreign Affairs Training Center - A nationwide design competition was held for this facility, which included input from the National Capitol Planning Commission and the Virginia State Historical Society. The multi-educational facility totals 500,000 sf and includes two 4-story educational buildings, one 3-story conference/dining center, one 2-story visitors’ center, one 1-story child care center and renovations to the 5-story historic administration building. A cast-in-place concrete flat slab system was selected for the primary structural system in the three main buildings to minimize the structural depth and facilitate low-rise buildings. All of the buildings are connected by either an underground tunnel constructed of cast-in-place concrete or elevated pedestrian bridges framed with steel construction.
