 Commerce Towers

Commerce Towers - Developed in 1928 by noted Houston businessman Jesse H. Jones, the Commerce Building has been significantly transformed from a 24-story, two-towered office building into Commerce Towers, a residential high-rise. All structural revisions to the concrete and steel structure were made without disturbing the original brick facade. Structural challenges included converting the lower six levels of the building into a parking garage, which required the insertion of a new floor, ramp additions, and column relocations. Additional structural modifications involved several stairwell relocations, elevator opening closures, large balcony additions, and an increase in the live load capacity of the upper tower roof to accommodate a roof garden. Loft spaces were also designed for areas with unusually tall floor-to-ceiling heights.
