Kinkaid Theatre
-
The primary component of the new facility is a 780-seat proscenium theater for student presentations to their peers, parents, teachers, and general audience. The drama classroom is a 2,500 sf black box theater that seats 200. The facility includes rehearsal rooms, lobby/prefunction, and other support spaces. Project challenges included the stage fly loft’s height requirement of 50 feet in a 35-foot height limit residential building zone. To fulfill this requirement, Haynes Whaley Associates designed retaining walls and a foundation system that allowed the building to extend 23 feet into the ground. A structural steel framing system was utilized to accommodate the special features of the project: long spans in tall volume spaces, tiered seating, balconies, and elevated box seats.
